Filipino film “Rainbow’s Sunset” emerged victorious internationally as it clinched major awards in the 52nd Worldfest-Houston International Film Festival in Texas, United States.

KAMI learned that the Best Picture in 2018 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) participated in the said event, together with other movies from more than 72 countries.

One of the biggest awards that the LGBTQ-themed film received in the aforementioned film festival was the Special Jury Prize.

Lead actors Eddie Garcia and Toni Mabesa were also acclaimed for their performance as they shared the highly-coveted Best Actor award.

Because of this, Toni expressed how he felt when his name was called to receive the prestigious recognition.

He also mentioned that Eddie is deserving of the award and that their director, Joel Lamangan, did an excellent job in guiding his artists.

“Such a great honor to be recognized at the third oldest film festival in the US... It’s a big honor for the Philippines, indeed,” he quipped in an interview with INQUIRER.net.

“Eddie deserves the award. He is the major protagonist in the film. We were all, in a sense, reacting to Eddie’s character,” he added.

Meanwhile, Eric Ramos, the screenwriter of “Rainbow’s Sunset,” also got the Gold Remi awards for Best Story Innovation.

According to him, the award was his first in the international level and he was really thrilled upon receiving his latest honor.

“The jury called it a Story Innovation Award, so it must be a recognition of the script’s uniquely Filipino take on the subject of gay relationships,” he said.

In a previous article by KAMI, Joel Lamangan and the other MMFF winners called out cinema owners for unfair treatment.

“Rainbow’s Sunset” is a Filipino film that revolved around the story of an 84-year-old husband who fell in love with his gay bestfriend. The movie reportedly ranked 5th in terms of box office earnings among 8 entries in MMFF 2018.
