- A video of Pope Francis refusing to let people kiss his ring went viral
- Many people questioned the act of the pontiff
- However, the Pope has broken his silence about the controversy
Recently, a video went viral on Twitter showing the awkwardness between Pope Francis and the worshippers when the pontiff refused to allow them from kissing his symbolic ring.
KAMI learned that the video was from the visit of Pope Francis in the town of Loreto in Italy last Monday, March 25. It can be seen that some Catholics bowed down and leaned in to kiss the ring of the Pope. However, he pulled back his hand instead.
Many netizens found the act of Pope Francis to be strange and awkward. Some also said that the Pope was trying to break a tradition.
In a report by the Reuters (author Philip Pullella), the main reason behind his refusal of ring-kissing was for sanitary purposes.
Vatican spokesperson Alessandro Gissoti said that the Pope does not want germs to spread and avoid contagion.
"The pope told me the reason he did not allow people to kiss his ring was because of hygiene... to avoid contagion when there are long queues of people," he said.
The spokesperson also mentioned that the Pope still allows people to kiss his ring, but for a limited number of worshippers only. However, the Pope still personally likes embracing people and being hugged by them.
