- A viral photo claimed that the Catholic church allegedly wanted to bring back the death penalty
- The viral photo was shared by a page supporting President Rodrigo Duterte
- However, the claim has been debunked by a French news agency
Multiple social media posts went viral after claiming that the Catholic Church wants to bring back the death penalty. However, KAMI learned that this claim has been debunked.
In a report by the ABS-CBN News, several Facebook pages supporting President Rodrigo Duterte shared a photo showing that the Philippine clergy was holding a banner that read: “HINDI lahat sinabi ng Pari, TAMA. Mag-isip din kayo! #YesToDeathPenalty”
The post also had a caption that stated, “#YesToDeathPenalty Tama! mag-isip din kayo! Dahil sabi din sa bibliya na susunod din tayo sa batas ng Gobyerno sa Lupa.”

However, when French news agency Agence France-Presse conducted a reverse image search, they found out that the viral photo was edited.
The original photo was first posted on the Facebook page of Immaculate Conception Major Seminary. The authentic banner had a text that said: “HINDI lahat ng legal, TAMA. Death Penalty: Maling mali! #NoToDeathPenalty”
In 2017, the House of Representatives passed a bill seeking to restore the death penalty for crimes involving illegal substance. It was back in 2006 when former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo passed a law to abolish the death penalty.
