A total of 40 kilos of plastic garbage were located inside the belly of a whale that was found dead in Compostela Valley on March 15.

KAMI learned of this information after Marine Biologist Darrell Blatchley and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) proceeded with the necropsy of the deceased animal.

Darrell said in a report that they were able to recover a plastic bag that was used in plantations of bananas and some grocery bags inside the whale’s stomach.

It also swallowed 16 pieces of rice sacks and other plastic garbage, which caused the whale to starve and get dehydrated because of plastic ingestion.

According to the aforementioned Biologist, the amount of plastic materials that they got from the whale’s stomach is the largest so far among those that they have examined.

Because of this, he called on the people to stop polluting the sea and the river because of its harmful effects to living things.

He furthered that many individuals benefit from the food given by the sea so throwing garbage to this body of water is also dangerous to their health.

"Every single river, every single canal goes directly to the ocean. So everything from small whales and dolphins, even the sea turtles are affected by this, as well as humans,” Darrell quipped.

“We are eating the food that comes out of that ocean. So we're basically throwing our own garbage into our food source," he concluded.

It can be remembered that there were also 3 whales and dolphins that died because of plastic ingestion just this year.
