There are times that grandparents would often spoil their grandchildren by giving them permission to do things or by allowing them to do what they want. However, sometimes when grandparents spoil their grand-kids, it also affects the parents’ way of disciplining their own children.

KAMI learned the reason why grandparents tend to spoil their grand-kids. According to a report by ABS-CBN News, one factor could be that the grandparents no longer hold the sole responsibility of disciplining the children.

"Ang lolo at lola, pinalaki na niya, dinisiplina na niya 'yong anak niya tapos 'yong anak niyang 'yon, may anak. So 'yong kaniyang job na disiplinahin 'yong anak niya, tapos na siya doon," said Dr. Honey Carandang of MLAC Institute for Children and Families, Inc.

"Ngayon, ang pagdidisiplina doon sa anak ng anak niya, sa apo niya, ay nasa nanay at tatay na ang role," she added.

However, Carandang pointed out that it only becomes the grandparents’ responsibility to discipline their grandchildren when their parents are away like working abroad.

Carandang also emphasized that if ever the kids will be seeking the permission of their grandparents, their parents should also be consulted about it.

So, how to deal with it when grandparents spoil the children too much? Talk to them.

According to a report by The Asianparent Singapore (author Karen Mira), it is necessary to talk with the grandparents on how they should be treating their grandchildren and then compromise.

It is also important to set a little limit and accept the grandparents’ role in their children’s lives. At the end of the day, it all boils down to communication and respect.
