The Mendiola Massacre or “Black Thursday” as called by Filipino journalists happened on January 22, 1987, along the street of Mendiola in Manila where the Malacanan is located.
Group of around 10,000 to 15,000 farmers led by Kilusang Magbubukid sa Pilipinas (KMP) protested to the Palace, hoping to have a dialogue with Aquino and raise their problems in terms of land reforms.
The police and Philippine Marine Corps immediately guarded the place along with army trucks, fire trucks, and water cannons. Unfortunately, the protest ended with a bloody scuffle.
Around 13 people were reported dead and at least 50 got injured due to the protest. According to a report by Rappler, Aquino created the “Citizens’ Mendiola Commission” in order to know how the violence started during the protest and who was supposedly be held responsible for it.
However, it has been reported that no one was punished over multiple deaths. The House Committee on Human Rights had recommended giving compensation for the victims, but it was reported that no one received any compensation.
In a report by ABS-CBN News in 2017, farmers and the families of the victims were still trying to seek justice over the Mendiola Massacre. They also called on President Rodrigo Duterte to come up with genuine land reform and end the oppression of the farmers in provinces.
