The third most powerful official of Roman Catholic Church, Cardinal George Pell, was found guilty of the sexual abuse charges filed against him. KAMI learned that the Vatican treasurer was accused of molesting two 13-year-old choir boys in 1990s.

According to a report by CNN Philippines, a secret trial was held in Melbourne, Australia in December 2018. However, Chief Judge Peter Kidd has lifted the court order to ban the media from reporting the case.

The prosecution stemmed from the testimony of a man who claimed that the 77-year-old Catholic official abused him and another boy after a mass was held in St. Patrick’s Cathedral. However, the second victim died of drug abuse and the living victim’s identity cannot be revealed as per Australian law on sexual abuse victims.

The victim stated that Pell caught the two choirboys drinking wine in the priest’s sacristy. The accuser also said that Pell asked one of them to do oral sex on him and perform sexual acts on the other choirboy. After a month, Pell allegedly pushed the victim against the wall and groped his private part.

However, the Vatican treasurer has insisted that he is innocent and described the charges as “products of fantasy.” His lawyer, Richter, has argued that the attack was impossible.

In a report by Reuters, Pope Francis has removed Pell as one of his close advisers. However, the Vatican has yet to comment regarding the issue.

The Vatican treasurer took an indefinite leave in 2016 to face the charges against him.

As previously reported by KAMI, Pope Francis has acknowledged the controversies that there were priests and bishops who sexually abused nuns. The pontiff said that he thinks that such crime still happens every now and then, but they want to do more to address the crisis.
