- Maria Ressa of Rappler was served an arrest warrant inside her office in Pasig City
- She is facing cyber libel complaints over an article published in 2012
- Ressa is expected to post bail tomorrow, February 14
Rappler’s Chief Executive Officer Maria Ressa is now under the custody of authorities after being arrested Wednesday inside the headquarters of her news agency.
KAMI learned that the award-winning journalist is facing cyber libel complaints over a “defamatory” article published in 2012 that was entitled “CJ using SUVs of controversial businessman.”
It was the agents of National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) who served the Warrant of Arrest to Ressa in Pasig City.
Some individuals from Rappler tried to stream the arrest but they were allegedly told by an “officer” to refrain from taking pictures and videos inside the room.
Although the charges are bailable, the journalist will need to wait until tomorrow when courts open their services again.
Ressa has yet to issue an official statement regarding this matter.
In a previous article by KAMI, the Department of Justice (DOJ) decided to indict Ressa and a former reporter with regards to the controversial article.
Maria Ressa, or Maria Angelita Aycardo Ressa in real life, is a Filipina journalist, author, and businesswoman. She was named “Person of the Year” by Times in 2018.
