Pope Francis has recently made his historic three-day visit to the United Arab Emirates. KAMI learned that Pope Francis was the first ever pope to deliver a mass in an Arabian peninsula.
In a report by CNN Philippines, the mass was attended by 135, 000 people at the Zayed Sports City stadium in Abu Dhabi on Tuesday.
During the papal visit, Pope Francis and Grand Imam of Al Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayeb, have signed “The Document on Human Fraternity,” which invites everyone who has faith in God and in the human fraternity to unite.
After signing the document, Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al Azhar made the traditional “nose kissing” during the inter-religious meeting.
Many netizens were shocked by this act. Some netizens were quick to criticize. Here are some of their comments based on the Facebook page of ABS-CBN News:
“Bakit lips to lips nakakahiya naman”
“5 SECONDS! WALANG MALISYA!”
“Are men kissing at the lips a tradition?”
“Kung beso-beso ok lang pero eto lips to lips? Tama ba nakikita ko??”
However, some shared their knowledge on the traditional behavior.
“RESPETO AT PANG UNAWA
YAN ANG MGA KATANGIAN NA WALA SA KARAMIHAN NG PILIPINO”
“ignorance of culture. malicious minds. bibig bago ang isip. condolence, pilipinas. ps. meron bang isip?”

In a report by Al Arabiya, the “nose kissing” may look like an intimate act for those who are not aware of the traditional gesture. However, the nose symbolizes pride. The “nose kissing” is considered as a salutation or greeting in Gulf countries. It is not just merely a greeting, but also a way of telling on how people relate to each other for it also symbolizes friendship and respect.
