The Commission on Audit (COA) released a report regarding the expenses of the senators in 2017. KAMI learned that Senator Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel and Senator Antonio Trillanes IV topped the list.

According to the report submitted by COA supervising auditor Olympia Balugay, Sen. Pimentel’s office spent P127.8 million when he was still Senate President.

His office spent P15.7 million in consultancy fees and P11.7 million for miscellaneous fees. Meanwhile, Pimentel spent 49.2 million for the salaries and benefits of his staff as reported by GMA News.

However, Sen. Pimentel said that this was expected as the Senate President.

“That is expected. The Senate President is allocated a higher budget, because as the head of agency he also has many additional responsibilities and functions,” Pimentel said.

“Let us look at past years' COA reports and find out who were the biggest spenders in the Senate. If it is not the Senate President then that would be the biggest surprise!” he added.

Placing as the second biggest spender is opposition Sen. Trillanes with P87 million expenses. He shed around P39.8 million for the salaries and benefits of his staff. Meanwhile, he spent P15.7 million for consultancy fees.

“My office merely utilized those allocations instead of realigning them for other purposes. Just to be clear, the COA report didn't cite any irregularity on my expenditure,” Trillanes said.

Senators Manny Pacquiao spent P86.4 million, Risa Hontiveros shed P85.2 million, Bam Aquino spent P85 million, and P84.4 million for Ralph Recto.
