- Imee Marcos said that she earned a degree in Princeton University
- She claimed that she had a degree in “religions and politics” and that she graduated with honors
- However, the claim is reported to be FALSE
Ilocos Governor Imee Marcos claimed that she got a degree in an Ivy League School—Princeton University. However, KAMI learned that Marcos did NOT graduate from the prestigious university in New Jersey.
During an interview of DZMM with the Ilocos Governor on December 13, 2018, she was asked if she graduated from Princeton to settle the controversial issue once and for all. However, Marcos did not directly answer the question. Instead, she talked about the election season.
"Yes, tama po talagang it's the season. Talagang eleksyon na eleksyon na kahit na hindi pa nagdedeklara ang Comelec. Ginawa rin yan kay Bongbong at sa mga iba pang nakikilala natin," she answered as reported by ABS-CBN News.
While in another forum last January 16, Marcos was asked again about her degree and if she had it at Princeton University.
“Oo naman, oo naman,” she said. Marcos also added that she had a degree in “religion and politics.”
On her official Facebook page, it was written that she is, “one of the first female graduates from an Ivy League School—Princeton University, graduating with honors.”
However, Rappler reported that the Marcos did NOT graduate from Princeton. Through an email, Princeton deputy university spokesperson Michael Hotchkiss confirmed this to Rappler.
"Our records do not show that Ms Marcos was awarded a degree,” said Spokesperson Hotchkiss.
However, he did confirm that Marcos studied in Princeton during Fall 1973 to Spring 1976 and then Fall 1977 to Spring 1979 terms. Hotchkiss also confirmed that Marcos’ major field was “Independent Concentration in Religion and Politics.”
The deputy spokesperson was not able to show other academic documents related to Marcos since it is not allowed to be shown in public as stated in United States federal law—Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974.
Back on August 31, 1983, a column titled “Dear Brooke: Here's The Lowdown On Coping With Your New Role As A Princeton Freshman," published in Princeton University’s Town Topics newspaper stated that Marcos “flunked out” or was dismissed due to failure from Princeton.
"You might draw a lesson from the experience of Imee Marcos. She never did graduate; she flunked out. At Princeton, that is one thing that is still being taken very seriously,” it said in the column.
