- Newly-crowned Miss Universe Catriona Gray had her first media interviews in New York
- She was asked about the feeling of competing against another Australian
- Catriona also spoke up about how Australia is having a share of her victory
Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray finally expressed her side about the way Australia is celebrating her victory in the prestigious pageant.
KAMI learned that the beauty queen was born in Cairns, Queensland but she transferred to the Philippines when she was just a teenager.
This, plus the fact that Catriona’s father is a Scottish-immigrant to Australia, became the reason why the foreign country is also having a share of her triumph.
In fact, a city in that aforementioned country planned a grand reception for the newly-crowned queen should she pay a visit.
In a media interview at Build Series in New York where she will be based for one year, the Pinay beauty queen told that she never felt awkward competing with another Australian in the pageant.
She expressed that in the entire competition, all she knew was the fact that she was representing the Philippines and that she is a Filipina.
“No, because I really feel like I’m a Miss Philippines,” she quipped.
“I feel like a Filipina, a Filipino woman. It just so happened that when I was growing up, I was very much of an Australian,” she added.
The Bicolana model also revealed that she does not take it seriously if Australia is claiming that she is “practically” a Miss Australia.
However, Catriona explained that it was never the fault of her foreign country if they felt excited for her.
“I just thought it was funny that there was this war, like, ‘no, she’s ours, she’s practically a Miss Australia.’ But I am a Miss Philippines,” she stated.
“But I can’t blame them for being excited, from really feeling the high spirits of the season, too. So we’ll let them have that,” she added.
In a previous article by KAMI, a former Miss Universe first runner-up spoke up about the comparison issue between Catriona and Pia Wurtzbach.
Catriona Gray is the fourth Filipina to bring home the Miss Universe crown. She is now in New York to do her duties and responsibilities as the new titleholder.
