- A social media post went viral claiming that President Rodrigo Duterte celebrated New Year in a “simple” way
- The photos showed that President Duterte was just wearing slippers during the occasion
- However, this claim was false as per French news agency
Multiple posts went viral on social media after claiming through photos that President Rodrigo Duterte has welcomed 2019 in a “simple” style. KAMI learned that this post had been debunked by a French news agency, Agence France-Presse (AFP).
According to the viral post’s caption, “PRRD simple new year celebration of in his house in Davao city.”
The caption was then followed by photos of President Duterte in a simple celebration and he was just wearing slippers during the occasion. The post was shared by a user supporting former Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Christopher “Bong” Go, Duterte’s ally.
In a viral tweet, it said that, “Pagsalubong sa Bagong taon 2019, isang simpleng tao, naka-tsinelas, tumutulong pa sa gawaing kusina, kinakausap ang mga kasambahay. Mahal ka namin Mayor President Duterte, Maligayang Bagong Taon sa ating lahat. God bless to our President, God bless Philippines.”
However, this claim was false according to the report of ABS-CBN News.
The AFP conducted a reverse search and they have learned that the photos used first appeared in an article by Rappler way back December 26, 2016. According to that report, it was President Duterte’s first Christmas ever since he assumed his post on June 30, 2016.
A Facebook post also went viral last December 27, 2016 with the same photos used recently. It stated that, “Simple pa rin siya hanggang ngayon. Naka-tsinelas, naghuhugas pa nga ng pinggan. Ito ang hindi kailanman maiintindihan ng mga elitist, oligarka, at mga bayarang media na madilaw ang ihi.”
