- There were social media posts claiming that the Philippines won in the Miss Universe twice during the term of President Duterte
- It said that Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach and Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray won in the current administration
- However, this claim was debunked by a French news agency
Several social media posts claimed that during the administration of President Rodrigo Duterte, the Philippines won the Miss Universe twice. KAMI learned that this claim had been debunked by a French news agency, Agence France-Presse (AFP).
The Facebook posts had misleading claims and were posted on fan pages supporting President Duterte and former PNP chief Bato dela Rosa. The posts reached more than 2.1 million on Facebook as reported by ABS-CBN News.
According to the post, “Dalawang Ms. Universe sa kanyang termino. Tunay kang pinagpala. Mahal naming Pangulo.”
The post showed a photo of Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach and recently crowned Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray along with a photo of President Duterte with Wurtzbach.
The claim was debunked by AFP. Wurtzbach won as the 64th Miss Universe on December 20, 2015 according to the international beauty pageant’s official website. Meanwhile, Duterte became the President on June 30, 2016.
It was back on July 18, 2016 when Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzback paid a courtesy visit to President Duterte which photo was used in the misleading post.
Wurtzback and Gray were the third and fourth Filipina to win in the Miss Universe. As previously reported by KAMI, Wurtzbach went all out to support Gray in the recent coronation.
