Elite Filipino boxer Donnie Nietes ended 2018 with a bang.
KAMI learned that Nietes defeated Japanese fighter Kazuto Ioka on New Year’s Eve.
With the victory, the Pinoy prizefighter captured the World Boxing Organization super flyweight crown and became a four-division champion.
Nietes defeated Ioka via split decision, earning a 118-110 card from judge Levi Martinez, 116-112 from Patricia Morse Jarman, and 112-116 from Samuel Nieto.
Most experts agreed that Nietes pulled off the victory, but disagreed with the wide card from judge Martinez, as Ioka won several rounds in the fight.
With this win, Nietes joined Manny Pacquiao and Nonito Donaire as the only Filipino boxers who have won titles in four weight divisions.
He will face next the winner of the upcoming fight between Pinoy boxer Aston Palicte and Puerto Rican Jose Martinez on January 31.
Nietes drew his fight with Palicte months ago, although boxing writers and experts stated that Nietes deserved to win.
