Paul Lee helps Rain or Shine escape Alaska in Game 2 of PBA Finals

Rain or Shine’s ace shooting guard followed up his superb Game 1 performance when he hit the game-winning basket to lift his team past the Alaska Aces, 105-103 on Sunday night at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum. Paul Lee and the Elasto Painters take a 2-0 lead in their best-of-seven series against the Aces.

Lee led Rain or Shine with 17 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Jeff Chan also had 17 points, while Jewel Ponferrada and Jericho Cruz had 14 markers each.

Rain or Shine was seemingly poised for a runaway win when it built a nine-point lead, 100-91, with over three minutes left in the game. However, Alaska fired back with a 12-3 run courtesy of back-to-back triples by RJ Jazul, free throws by Calvin Abueva, and a floater by Rob Dozier to tie the game with 27 seconds left.

The Elasto Painters designed the final play for Lee, and he did not disappoint. Lee made a drive down the lane before making a kickout pass to Beau Belga. Belga missed his three-point, but as luck would have it, Lee was at the right place to get the offensive rebound and launch  a quick shot. His fadeaway jumper in the dying seconds of the game broke the 103-all count and gave his team a two-point win.

Jazul paced the Aces with 24 points, while Dozier finished with 18 markers. Abueva and Sonny Thoss score 14 points each, and Cyrus Baguio added 14. The Aces had a balanced offense, but it was not enough to come up with the win.

The Aces will try to avoid a 3-0 hole as they take the E-Painters anew on Wednesday’s Game 3 also at the Big Dome.
