- Catriona Gray represented the Philippines in winning Miss Universe 2018
- However, Australians are also celebrating her win since she is half-Aussie
- She opened up about being a Filipina-Australian on the Kapamilya program “Tonight With Boy Abunda”
Catriona Gray won the Miss Universe 2018 crown representing the Philippines. But since she is half-Australian, many Australians are also celebrating her win.
However, The Courier-Mail’s headline became controversial since it features an image of Catriona with the word Philippines crossed out and the word Queensland replacing it, since she was born there.
KAMI learned that the beauty queen already talked to Boy Abunda on “Tonight With Boy Abunda” months ago about being half-Aussie and half-Pinay.
According to Catriona, she did not choose to be born in Australia but she chose to live in the Philippines when she was a teen so she wants to be known more as a Filipina-Australian rather than Australian-Filipina.
“Even though I was born in Australia, that’s not my choice. It was more of my parents’ choice.
“My decision to come to the Philippines at age 18 just after I graduated high school was like a self-discovery journey for me. [It was] my first step into figuring out who am I — what do I want to do with my life? — and just putting myself out of my comfort zone.”
“I chose to come here, and I came over on my own money. I wanted to prove to myself na kaya ko ‘to. I can do this,” she explained, as quoted by ABS-CBN News.
As reported earlier by KAMI, Catriona was crowned as the Miss Universe 2018.
Catriona Gray is a Filipino-Australian actress and model who was born on born January 6, 1994. Catriona’s father is Ian Gray, a Scottish-Australian. Her mother is Normita Magnayon, a Filipina from Albay.
