- An Australian tabloid was criticized by Filipino netizens due to its way of celebrating Catriona Gray’s victory
- It crossed out the name of the Philippines and put “Queensland”
- Catriona is a half-Filipina and half-Australian beauty queen
A lot of netizens got furious once again after a tabloid in Australia crossed out the name of the Philippines as the hometown of Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray.
KAMI learned that the newly-crowned queen is a half-Filipina and half-Australian that is why the aforementioned country is also celebrating her trending victory.
However, some social media users, especially those who are Filipino by blood, did not like how an Australian newspaper celebrated the triumph of Catriona.
In the front page of The Courier Mail, the word “Philippines” has an “x” mark and under it was the hometown of Catriona in Australia which is “Queensland.”
Inside the printed copy was an article about the Bicolana model, explaining how she becomes an Australian pride.
“Ms.Gray was discovered at 14 by North Queensland talent scout Henry Peterson, who also helped launch three former Miss Universe Australia winners Kimberley Busteed, Rachael Finch, and Jesinta Campbell,” the story wrote.
"Miss Gray has lived in Manila since graduating from Trinity Anglican School in Cairns in 2011. She is the only child of Australian-Scottish father Ian Gray and Filipino-born mother Mita Gray, who still live in Australia, but were watching on in Thailand,” the writer added.
Because of this, netizens threw their ferocious words against the said newspaper, saying that its action offended the nation who cherished and trained Catriona to be Miss Universe.
Although a lot of them supported the fact that Australia should have a fair share of the recent achievement, they said that the tabloid’s action was inappropriate and foul.
Here are the reactions from netizens:
“Yes, they can share the victory but to cross out the name of the country that clearly supported her, with the Filipino team that trained her, and the Filipino fans that prayed, cheered and rooted for her since her Miss World days and her unfortunate loss, I think it’s rude to cross it out and claim sole victory.”
“Australian nga sya pero Philippines pinaglalaban nya and walang tondo sa Australia.
“You've sent your own Miss Australia. Catriona carried "Philippines" on her chest. She talked about 104 million Filipinos behind her. She told everyone that she brought half of "her" country in the Miss U stage -- I bet we all know what country she's pertaining to.”
“Where is Australia when she didn’t win Miss World? Lol.”
“She may have grown in Australia but she found her purpose and cause in the Philippines. She found her passion, dedication and advocacy in the streets of the Philippines and that I believe, should be respected.”
In a previous article by KAMI, the mind-staggering cost of Catriona’s gowns during the prestigious pageant was revealed by her designer Mak Tumang.
Catriona Gray was born on January 6, 1994 to a Filipino mother and Scotish-born Australian father. She is the fourth Miss Universe from the Philippines.
