- President Rodrigo Duterte supports the idea of legalizing medical marijuana in the country
- Therefore, the Palace said that it is just logical for the President to sign any bill allowing it
- The bill regarding the legalization of medical marijuana is still pending in the House of Representatives
The Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a media briefing that it is logical for President Rodrigo Duterte to sign any bill that is same with his stand. KAMI learned that President Duterte still firmly believes in legalizing medical marijuana in the Philippines.
"He (The President) is in favor of limited use of marijuana," said Panelo as reported by CNN Philippines.
“Logically then he will support and sign any bill that would be consistent with his stand," he added.
The debate about the legalization of medical marijuana in the country has risen once again since Catriona Gray was asked about it in the Miss Universe 2018.
As previously reported by KAMI, Panelo said that the President could have influenced the answer of Gray in the prestigious international beauty pageant since they share the same opinion.
"I'm for it being used in a medical use but not so for recreational use," Gray answered.
"Because I think if people were to argue 'What about alcohol and cigarettes?' Well everything is good but in moderation," she added.
In September 2017, House panel approved the House Bill No. 6517 or the Philippine Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act which enables the use of marijuana for medical purposes. However, the bill is pending at the Lower House. Marijuana or cannabis is believed to treat some illness like epilepsy.
KAMI also reported before that aside from President Duterte, some senators are in favor to legalize marijuana in the country.
