- Philippines’ bet Catriona Gray was announced as the winner in the prestigious Miss Universe 2018
- She spoke with the media about her winning performance during the Coronation Night
- Catriona also shared what her mother told her during the competition
Newly-crowned queen Catriona Gray finally expressed her side about her overall winning performance in the recently-concluded Miss Universe pageant.
KAMI learned that the Pinay beauty queen bagged the highly-coveted crown during the Grand Coronation Night today, December 17 in Bangkok, Thailand.
Catriona nailed both the swimsuit and evening gown competitions and her wit was evident in all the interviews that she had on stage.
After the crowning moment, the Philippines’ bet had her first interview with ABS-CBN News while already wearing the much-deserved crown.
Although a lot of people said that she will win the competition, the beauty queen admitted that she was not expecting it since she knew South Africa and Venezuela are strong contenders.
Until the final moment, Catriona expressed that it was a guessing game for her and all that was in her mind was to make the Filipino people proud.
“The girls that I was with – South Africa and Venezuela – they were such a high caliber too. So it was still a guessing game for me. I didn’t know…” she quipped.
“Waiting for the announcement, I was just praying and I was just looking at the people because that is why I am here. As long as I make them proud, then I have done my duty,” she added.
The newly-crowned Miss Universe also explained that she saw her parents watching from the audience area especially her mother whom she saw crying during the final moments of the contest.
Catriona even shared that her mom used to watch Miss Universe pageants and she told the Pinay model that she dreamed of her winning the crown in red dress.
“I’ve seen my mom and dad already. My mom was in tears and she told me, ‘I dreamed you would do this,’” she stressed.
“Because I don’t know if everyone knows, back when I was 13 years old, my mom used to watch Miss Universe all the time and then she said, ‘I had a dream that you won Miss Universe in a red dress,’” she added.
With regards to the Question and Answer portion, Catriona uttered that she does not remember the things that she said on stage when asked by host Steve Harvey.
She emphasized that things went too fast during the Coronation Night and it was her desire to show the judges who she is that was continuously running in her head.
“I don’t even remember what I said now. Because when you’re up there on stage, everything just goes by on a blur,” the Miss Universe 2018 further said.
“I just wanted to be myself. I wanted to show the judges who Catriona is. I am not just a pretty girl in a pretty dress. I wanted to show them a bit of my character…” she added.
Here is the video of the interview:
In a previous article by KAMI, a video of the dramatic reaction of Catriona when her name was called as the winner circulated online.
Catriona Gray is now the fourth Miss Universe from the Philippines after Gloria Diaz in 1969, Margie Moran in 1973, and Pia Wurtzbach in 2015.
