There are some senators who are okay with the use of cannabis or marijuana for medical purposes. KAMI learned that there might be a possibility that medical marijuana would be legalized in the Philippines.
In a report by ABS-CBN News, Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri stated that medical marijuana can be used in treating patients with epilepsy.
“Honestly, I’m okay with it because I know some of my friends whose children have epilepsy and it saved them,” Zubiri stated.
As per Senator Panfilo Lacson, he would like to know more about it first.
“Gusto ko mapakinggan ang debate. Kung medical, baka puwede. Huwag ang recreational,” said the senator.
“Baka mamaya, oo nga ang intention maganda, medical ang gamit pero baka magkaroon ng proliferation ng marijuana para sa recreational. Ma-defeat ang purpose,” Lacson added.
As reported by CNN Philippines, during the senatorial forum last December 2, 4 out of the 8 senatorial bets answered “yes” with regard to medical marijuana legalization.
Those who said “yes” were Chel Diokno, JV Ejercito, Juan Ponce Enrile and Sergio Osmeña III. Meanwhile, those who voted “no” were Gary Alejano, Bam Aquino, Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa and Francis Tolentino.

In House Bill 6517 or Philippine Compassionate Medical Cannabis Act, it seeks to legalize medical cannabis for medical purposes. There will be a qualified medical cannabis physician who can prescribe marijuana to those qualified patients with their identification card. There would also be a qualified medical cannabis caregiver and compassionate center. However, this bill is still pending at the lower House.
In a recent report by KAMI, President Rodrigo Duterte made a joke that he was taking marijuana to remain awake amid exhausting activities. This drew flak to the netizens and the Palace reiterated that the President was just kidding about it.
