A source from the Palace said that President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Supreme Court Associate Justice Lucas Bersamin as the new Chief Justice. However, KAMI learned that it is not official yet because the appointment letter is yet to be released within the day.
As reported by Philippine Star, Bersamin is the third most senior Supreme Court Justice that was shortlisted for the post. Bersamin was a regional trial court judge back in 1986 and a Court of Appeals associate justice.
In a report by ABS-CBN News, as associate justice, Bersamin was in favour of ousting former Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno. He was also in favour of the burial of former President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani as well as the declaration of Martial Law in Mindanao.
As previously reported by KAMI, the last Chief Justice appointed was Teresita De Castro who also retired after 44 days. De Castro was the one who replaced Sereno when she was ousted.
