Chinese and Philippines have established relations hundreds of years ago starting from our ancestors. Even Filipino leaders have Chinese in their roots like Philippine national hero Jose Rizal, then President Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III and current President Rodrigo Duterte.

In a recent report by KAMI, Chinese President Xi Jinping has set his foot in the lands of Philippines. His airplane landed at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport and was welcomed with red carpet. Philippines also prepared for the Chinese president’s two-day state visit by placing Chinese flags with Philippine flags. The last Chinese president who made a state visit in the country was Hu Jintao back in 2005.

The question is, why is Xi Jinping’s visit in the Philippines so important for the Filipinos?

As reported by Rappler, the joint exploration between Philippines and China for West Philippine Sea will be discussed during the state visit. As previously reported by KAMI, President Duterte is still negotiating with Xi and China has been eyeing to give “bigger share” to the Philippines if ever the joint development pushes through.

In addition, Philippines might be falling into a “debt trap” with China. They are willing to grant loans to the Philippines and it will be further discussed during the state visit.

As reported by ABS-CBN News, Philippines and China had strengthened relations in terms of trade, infrastructure, telecommunications and tourism.

Two years ago, China bought lots of fruits from the Philippines which made farmers earn $1.5 billion. This year, around 972, 550 Chinese tourists came in the Philippines as recorded by Department of Tourism.
