The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has awarded the center player of University of the Philippines (UP) Fighting Maroons, Bright Akhuetie as the Most Valuable Player for Season 81.

KAMI learned that he has an average score of 18.86 points and 14.64 rebounds as reported by ABS-CBN News.

Akhuetie is Nigerian and the first player of Maroons to bag the title since 1986. It is also the first year of playing in UAAP as stated in a report of Rappler.

The VP has a statistical points (SPs) of 82.5. In addition, Ateneo de Manila’s rookie Angelo Kouame ranks second for having 76.2 SPs. However, Kouname will not be joining the Mythical Five because the rule states that only one foreign athlete join the team.

Included in the Mythical Five are Akhuetie, University of the East’s Alvin Pasol, UP’s Juan Gomez de Liano, La Salle’s Justine Baltazar and Adamson’s Jerrick Ahanmisi.

However, the netizens had different reactions to the fact that a Nigerian got the title. Here are some of their comments on ABS-CBN News’ Facebook page:

"Foreigner should not be allowed to win those award.dapat mga local lang or half breed as long as may dugong pinoy.dapat gawa cla ibang award like best foreign player."
“K... sana iba ang criteria sa foreign players against local and half. Hahahahaha”

As previously reported by KAMI, the UP Fighting Maroons finally had their way back to the Final Four after almost 21 years. The netizens also felt proud to the team’s hard work and achievement.
