A Senate bill filed by Senator Richard Gordon seeks to make organ donation from brain dead persons as a mandatory act. However, people still have a choice if they do not want to donate their organ.

KAMI learned from ABS-CBN News that as stated in Organ Donor Act of 2018, viable organs of declared brain dead patients will be automatically donated to those who need it.

“This is an ambition for our people para hindi sila mahirapan. Lahat ng Pilipino, obligado diyan, pero kung ayaw mo, magsusulat ka, meron kang ‘do not take my organs out’,” Gordon explained.

This act is supported by National Kidney Transplant Institute (NKTI) since there was an increase in patients who are going through dialysis and need to undergo kidney transplant. In 2017, they had 25,000 dialysis and kidney transplant patients but only had 500 kidney donors.

However, there are apprehensions regarding this case. Every Filipino must be educated regarding this act and there are several religious and cultural beliefs contrasting the idea.

The netizens shared their opinion regarding the matter. Here are some of their comments on GMA News’ Facebook page:

“Dapat yung mga politician lang gawing automatic organ donor... Gusto nilang magsilbi sa bayan eh... “
“I think that being an organ donor is still a decision only the person concern can make. Voluntary. Never compulsory.”
“As a health care not in favor of this mandatory organ donation.there is a patient right to cant force an individual to donate his organ, its against the medical ethics.what the government should do is to do a massive information drive regarding the importance of organ donation.”
“kung sino man pulitiko nkaisip nito .subukan muna na natin sa iyo at sa lahat ng pamilya mo.pag ok resulta ituloy natin maging sa mga future relatives kami wag mo idamay sa kalokohan mo.gagawun mo pang negosyo un mga organs ng mga Pilipino”
“Prone sa abuse dito sa pinas... baka pwede pa mabuhay dahil walang pera ideclare agad patay na para mabenta mga organs nila.....”
“We will be an organ donor capital in the world if that will happen. Sindikato ung makikinabang”
“Magiging source ng korruption yan from doctors, hospital , pulis at punenarya..dapat voluntary pinas eh lahat pwede pagka kitaan at lallo dadami ang patayan at hired killers na riding in tandem para marami makukuhang mga.organs sa mga patay. MAganda ang wisdom ng panukala but iit wont work sa pinas due to corruption on all levels na”
“Organ donation in the Philippines is a good idea but this should be voluntary only meaning the donor can donate his organ with a written consent that he's donating his organ.”

As stated in RA 7170 or Organ Donation Act of 1991, donating of all or parts of deceased human body for specified purposes.
