- The Miss Earth organizers are now being investigated for another controversy
- This is following the sexual harassment issue aired by the candidates
- The organizers are given five days to respond to the complaint
Following the sexual harassment complaints aired by the candidates, the Miss Earth organizers are now being probed for another heavy controversy involving privacy.
KAMI learned that the authorities, particularly the National Privacy Commission (NPC), have started investigation over the claim of Miss Earth Canada Jaime VandenBerg that her phone number was given to a sponsor without her consent.
The sponsor, who was identified as Amado Cruz of Manila Yacht Club, allegedly utilized the contact information to identify the candidate’s hotel and room number and even to ask sexual favors from her.
On November 11, the NPC already sent a letter to Carousel Productions, Inc, the organizer of the prestigious international event, for its explanation on possible violation of data privacy laws.
The said commission is also conducting an investigation regarding the legality of data processing within the stated Productions.
“Under the Data Privacy Act, all personal information controllers such as yourselves must abide by principles of transparency, legitimate purpose, and proportionality,” according to NPC.
The Miss Earth organizers are given five days to provide a detailed explanation over the controversy.
In a previous article by KAMI, Miss Earth Cuba contradicted the claims of her fellow candidates and said that there was no sexual harassment during the month-long event.
Miss Earth is an annual beauty pageant that is focused on environmental awareness. Miss Vietnam Nguyễn Phương Khánh was crowned as this year’s winner.
