Thousands of garbage were found in Cagayan de Oro City. The wastes were reported shipped from South Korea. KAMI learned from GMA News that according to Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), it may have slipped through Bureau of Customs (BOC) due to misdeclaration.
According to DENR Undersecretary Benny Antiporda, there were other 51 containers discovered to be garbage or waste as well.
Environmental groups have been urging to return the waste back in South Korea. EcoWaste Coalition’s national coordinator Aileen Lucero said that the dumping of waste in the country is “outrageous” and “unacceptable”.
“It's high time for the Philippines to disallow garbage imports and to demand that developed countries, as well as manufacturers of plastics and other disposable goods, take full responsibility for their products throughout their whole life cycle," Lucero stated.
