Streaming service Netflix announced on November 7 that it will be adapting a Graphic Novel created in the Philippines as one of its anime series.

KAMI learned that the exciting announcement took place in Singapore and it was revealed by Taito Okiura, the Netflix’s director of anime.

The Filipino Graphic Novel that was luckily chosen to be part of the said streaming service is “Trese.”

Created by Budjette Tan and illustrated by Kajo Balidissmo, “Trese” is a comics that features mythical creatures of Philippine folklore.

The character, Alexandra Trese, does her best to fight against an underworld law offender consisted of supernatural beings.

Netflix tapped the services of Fil-Am animation director Jay Oliva to be the executive producer of the said Graphic Novel. He is known for his animated works such as “Batman: Under the Red Hood,” “Justice League Dark,” and “The Legend of Korra.”

"Since 2005, TRESE has been published and distributed in the Philippines. While we feel lucky and thankful for all the readers who’ve picked up our books, we’ve always dreamed for TRESE to reach more readers in foreign shores,” Budjette wrote on his post.

“With your help, we target to have the funds to print a new edition of TRESE Issue 1 (with updated art and bonus content), and be able to ship it to readers around the world. The funds we generate will also allow Kajo to devote more time to illustrating the pages," he added.

In a previous article by KAMI, Netflix invited Filipina actress Liza Soberano to star in a Hollywood series but the promising celebrity declined the offer because of conflict in schedule.

Aside from “Trese,” the said streaming service already included Filipino films such as Heneral Luna, Birdshot, Kita Kita, That Thing Called Tadhana, and Buybust.
