Amid the criticisms and issues regarding his health, President Rodrigo Duterte has made an impact not just in the Philippines but across Asia during his term since 2016.
KAMI has learned from Manila Times that the President has contributed to many changes that have happened in Asia most especially in terms of geopolitics and law enforcement.
Here are 5 different ways that President Duterte has contributed in Asia:
1. Strengthened ties between Philippines and Japan
Japan has rendered both economic and military help to the Philippines. They donated marine surveillance aircraft and patrol boats. Even Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has visited Manila and Davao.
2. Russia’s donation to Philippines
Philippines has strengthened maritime ties with Russia. It was reported that Russia has offered arms to the country and they even made exchanges in terms of naval visits with the Philippines.
3. Anti-terrorism cooperation
After the siege that happened in Marawi City, countries like Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore has strengthened their anti-terrorism cooperation with Philippines. President Duterte has also declared martial law in Mindanao.

4. Anti-narcotics campaign
President Duterte has been known for his campaign against illegal drugs. He has acknowledged that many lives were taken during police operation. However, this campaign has inspired Indonesia and Bangladesh to strengthen their anti-narcotics campaign.
5. Protection of overseas workers
Middle East countries have regulated policies that would prioritize the condition and welfare of their overseas workers. This came after when Kuwait-Philippines had a diplomatic crisis.
