Despite being undermanned, Barangay Ginebra showed who the real Kings are in their recent match against San Miguel Beer last Sunday, September 23 at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
KAMI has learned that the Gin Kings dominated the Beermen with score 110-102 in PBA Governor’s Cup despite the absence of Ginebra star players Greg Slaughter, Japeth Aguilar, Sol Mercado, Jervy Cruz, Raymond Aguilar and Art dela Cruz.
As reported by Rappler, Justin Brownlee and Aljon Mariano aced the game. Brownlee scored 29 points, 19 rebounds and 7 assist. Mariano contributed 20 points on a 7-of-7 shooting.
The University of Santo Tomas alumni, Mariano, shared his experience after having a stellar performance in the game. He said that he just made the most out of his role to guard the imports as tasked by Coach Tim Cone. He even added that the points he contributed to win the game was just a “bonus”.
Ginebra coach Tim Cone commended Mariano’s performance.
“He's been playing well in practice, and it's good he's now showing it in the game. He stepped up big time in this game defending, rebounding and running the breaks. He played really well,” he said as reported by PBA.
However, Beermen key players Christian Standhardinger and Arwind Santos led the game for their team. Standhardinger shed off 25 points while Santos chipped in 22 points.
Ginebra Gin Kings now has a record of 4-1 at third place.
