Election violence have tainted the end of the campaign period, as per police and military reports.
Unidentified suspects ambushed the convoy of Melanie Uy, a mayoral candidate in Jones, Isabela. The said ambush killed Barangay Chairman Rhoda Anunciacion, Lydia Zapata, and one member of the mayoral candidate’s security detail.
Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) public affairs office chief Col. Noel Detoyato said that elements of the 86th Infantry Battalion encountered several gunmen during the incident. The AFP reported that the killing was related to this year’s elections.
The AFP also reported a grenade attack near the lodging of military and police personnel in Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao. The said incident was just one among the several explosions that have hit different schools in the municipalities of Sultan Kudarat and Sultan Mastura in Maguindanao.
In Diplahan, Zamboanga Sibugay, three armed men fired at the house of a local official at 12:30 in the morning although no one was harmed in the incident.
Meanwhile, ten armed men killed Lantapan, Bukidnon-mayoral bet Armando Ceballos. Regional police office said that they are still investigating the motives behind the grisly shooting of the independent mayoral candidate.
Jose Gentiles, Northern Mindanao police director, said that the bonnet-wearing armed men who shot Ceballos multiple times were on board a cargo truck when they entered the victim’s residential compound. The attackers have allegedly stole an estimate of P80,000 in cash and .45 caliber hand gun.
Wilfred Jay Balisado, a lawyer of the Commission on Elections, said that they will strengthen intelligence gathering and police visibility during the elections.
