What a great turn out of events for Gilas Pilipinas! The Philippine national team crushed Qatar in their historic closed-door game on Monday, September 17 at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
KAMI has read that only 220 select people were able to watch the game at the Big Dome. There were no cheering crowd nor loud music to hype everyone. However, it did not stop Gilas Pilipinas to win the game.
With final score of 92-81, Gilas made the 17-point lead during the second half of the game. At first half, it was a rough start for the Philippines, 39-52, with Qataris leading the game.
As reported by ABS-CBN Sports, Scottie Thompson and Japeth Aguilar heated up the match during the third quarter. Aguilar and Alex Cabagnot both scored 16, Stanley Pringle shed 13 points, while Beau Belga chipped in 11 points.
National team head coach Yeng Guiao shared their experience during their first closed-door game. Guiao said it was “surreal” and it felt “weird” because there was nobody cheering for the team even though they were playing in our own country.
However, he reminded the team that a lot of Filipinos were still rooting for the Gilas Pilipinas and watching via television and live stream.
Gilas Pilipinas’ record now is 5-3, placing third in Group F of FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 Asian Qualifiers.
