“Dear Father Noel Gatchalian,

Greetings of Peace.

I hope this open letter will find its way to you.

I was raised a Catholic by a pious mother (God bless her soul). She taught me the values and virtues of forgiving those who wish and do us harm. I grew up in an environment where the in-laws of my mother hated us, and that almost every day, we hear unsavory words coming either from my Lola, auntie and uncle, even if me and my mother did not do any harm to them. And so naturally, I hated them too from an early age.

But my mother told me that Christ taught us to forgive our enemies and I should not hate them. She did not quote the Bible because she cannot read, nevertheless she was the one who taught me that virtue. Although I may not be as forgiving as her, but just the same, I do not wish bad those who do me harm, even now.

I cannot understand why you, of all the people in the country have uttered such and in the celebration of the holy mass of wishing our president to be ill and finally rest. You have studied to become a priest for many years, and I think you have served the Church for quite sometime now, and correct if I am wrong, you are the personification of Christ the Redeemer when you celebrate the holy mass.

Now may I humbly ask you, what has become of you? Are you now praying that Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte will get sick and die? I do not consider myself a pious person, nor a good one, but I never prayed or wished someone to be sick and eventually rest just because that someone is a malevolent person. Christianity taught us from cradle to grave: “… that we should love (everyone) even our enemies and pray for those who persecute you (Matthew 5:44). Ephesians 4:32 further tell us: “Be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ forgave you.”

Fr. Gathalian, I know you are just human and maybe – like many – you are angry and frustrated by the recent events that befalls our country, and that even as a priest, you too have your political perspective, but you are first and foremost a priest and in the celebration of the liturgy, you personified Christ and in no way, under any circumstance, should not and must not succumbed to the weaknesses of the human person.

I am an avid supporter of Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte, and though I may not always understand his policies, I support him all the way in his programs of government. You may have your own political points of view, but you should not use the Church to lambast our president, he has a gargantuan task, that you will not even fathom its dept and even the Bible says: “Remind the people to respect the government and be law-abiding, always ready to lend a helping hand. No insults, no fights. God’s people should be bighearted and courteous.” Titus 3:1-2

Your brother in Christ,

Ejay Bustillo”
