- The parents of Mary Jane Veloso ran to Supreme Court
- Celia and Cesar Veloso appealed to let Mary Jane testify in court
- The Court of Appeals (CA) granted their petition
The family of human trafficking victim, Mary Jane Veloso, appealed to Supreme Court on Monday, September 3. Veloso’s parents, Celia and Cesar filed an appeal as a last resort to allow Mary Jane to testify in court.
KAMI learned from Rappler that the parents also filed a petition to cease the ongoing trial against recruiter Ma. Cristina Segio and Julius Lacanilao for the mean time.
According to Jose Deinla, lawyer from National Union of People’s Lawyers, “Kapag pinilit ang prosekusyon na mag-move on sa kaso ay magre-rest ito na hindi man lang nabibigay ang testimony ni Mary Jane, na sa ating palagay ay nilalabag ang kanyang due process,”
The petition seeks for Status Quo Ante Order (SQAO) to temporarily stop the trial and tp reverse two Court of Appeals (CA) decisions which hindered Mary Jane’s testimony.
However, the CA granted the petition assisted by Chief Persidea Acosta of Public Attorneys Office (PAO), who said that not allowing Mary Jane to testify will violate her rights as accused to appeal against the accuser in person.
All Mary Jane wanted was for her to go through deposition from her cell in Indonesia. She is currently on death row for an alleged drug trafficking. However, in her defense, she was only used as a drug mule by her alleged recruiters.
