- Sen. Risa Hontiveros seeks to file a resolution to declare August 16 as National Remembrance Day
- According to her, it will serve as a commemoration of Kian delos Santos’ death and other victims of EJK
- The netizens bashed the senator for her resolution
In a report by GMA News, Senator Risa Hontiveros filed a resolution to declare every August 16 as “National Day of Remembrance”. According to her, this is to commemorate the death of Kian delos Santos and all the victims of extrajudicial killings due to the government’s war on drugs.
Sen. Hontiveros filed Senate Resolution No. 848 yesterday, August 15, 2018. Hontiveros has been fighting for Kian’s innocence, saying that according to the witnesses and in a CCTV footage, Kian was physically attacked and was dragged to the place where he was shot.
Based on the Children Legal Rights and Development Center, there have been at least 74 minors that have been killed because of the war on drugs.
She said, “By choosing to remember those who have been felled by the war on drugs, we state our clear rejection of this culture of impunity and brazen disregard for due process and human rights,”
“To forget is to give consent. We have the duty to remember. Amid the deluge of fake news and the systemic attempt at data obfuscation and revisionism to cover up the thousands who have died under President Duterte's brutal drug war, we must not allow Kian and all the EJK victims to be rendered nameless, invisible and forgotten,", she added.
This time last year, 17-year-old Kian was killed during an anti-drugs operation in Caloocan. According to the police, the minor was an alleged drug courier for his father and uncle.
However, the netizens have negative reactions to the senator’s resolution. Here are their opinions from the comment section of GMA News’ Facebook page:
“I dont see any reason why we should reminisce to this person. They are not heroes.”
“The day of remembrance is synonymous to all souls day in November of every year. So what’s the point of this? Sayang ang resources, time and effort dito..”
“Say what Risa? You're definitely politicizing the death of victims AS IF they (not all) did nothing wrong.”
“Yung pagkamatay nga ng SAF44, walang national commemoration. Tapos gusto mo eh isang non-statesperson, non-combatant, non-military/intelligence na civilian ang i-memorialize? Just goes to show these clowns' priorities”
In a previous post by KAMI, Sen. Risa Hontiveros had a controversial discussion with Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III regarding the SOGIE Equality Bill. Hontiveros continues fighting for the rights and safety of women.
