- House Speaker Gloria Arroyo said she had a lunch with Sara Duterte
- The former President described their gathering as “social and private”
- Other lawmakers claimed that it was Arroyo who hosted the event but some said it was the Presidential daughter
Representative-now-Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo confirmed Monday that she had a lunch with Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte in what the former President called a “private, social gathering.”
In a video posted in Twitter, Arroyo said it was just a “thank you” lunch with Sara and other Congressmen.
Here is the video of short, ambush interview with Speaker Arroyo:
KAMI learned that it was not clear who presided the gathering as there are sources mentioning Arroyo and Sara’s names.
According to House Minority Leader Danilo Suarez, it was the Davao City Mayor who hosted the event in gratitude for the lawmakers who noticed her call to support Arroyo
"It was the mayor who hosted the event as a thank you for supporting her in her appeal to support GMA," said Suarez.
In contrast, Capiz Rep. Fred Castro claimed that it was the newly-installed House Speaker who held the gathering and Sara was just an invited guest.
"Ito ay luncheon na ibinigay ni Speaker Arroyo bilang pagtitipon at pagpapasalamat sa lahat ng sumuporta sa kanya. Naimbita lang si Mayor Sara," he said.
Meanwhile, when asked if the Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos was also in the gathering, Deputy Speaker Rolando Andaya said, “Yes, she was there.”
Just recently, Presidential daughter Sara endorsed Imee to be part of senatorial candidates who will banner the regional political party Hugpong Ng Pagbabago (HNP) in the May 2019 elections.
It can be remembered that both Sara and Imee played crucial roles in the ouster of former Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez which paved the way for the former President to take the post.
Sara was accused by Alvarez as part of the opposition after the Mayor formed another political party without the consent of her father.
On the other hand, Imee was known to be a political rival of Rodolfo Fariñas, the Ilocos Norte 1st District representative and the right-hand man of Alvarez.
Other guests who were spotted in the event were Buhay Party-list Rep. Lito Atienza, SAGIP Rep. Rodante Marcoleta, and former Presidential Management Staff head Elena Bautista-Horn.
Arroyo, who replaced Alvarez in a controversial House session on July 23, is the first woman and former Philippine head of state to become Speaker. She is also the first Speaker who was formerly charged with plunder.
