- Pacquiao decided not to let his team and family know about it to prevent them from worrying about his condition
Senator Manny Pacquiao’s information officer Aquiles Zonio has revealed that the boxing legend was rushed to the hospital just a week before fighting Lucas Matthysse in Malaysia.
KAMI learned that Pacquiao was taken to the Cardinal Santos Memorial Hospital in Manila on July 8 due to breathing difficulties while he was training for the fight.
According to Zonio’s article on PhilBoxing.com, the fighting senator was diagnosed with “inborn heart problem.”
He added that Pacquiao decided not to let his training team and family members know about his condition in order not to worry and demoralize them.
“Nobody knew about this — not even a single member of his training team or immediate members of his family…
“He didn’t want any member of his family to worry, the reason why he kept it to himself,” Zonio wrote.
Zonio also wrote that the Pinoy boxer decided not to follow doctors’ orders to cancel the fight with the Argentinian fighter.
Pacquiao underwent an angiogram – which involves inserting a catheter from the wrist to the heart in order to examine the arteries, according to Philippine Star. He then underwent an electrocardiogram (ECG).
“The entire medical procedure was finished around 3 a.m. on July and at around 7 a.m., we flew back to General Santos. Those who were with me were saddened and crying. But I told them, don’t worry, I’ll be okay and I’ll do everything to win the fight,” Pacquiao said.
As previously reported by KAMI, Pacquiao was able to score a seventh-round TKO win against Matthysse.
Pacquiao registered his 60th win as a professional boxer and won the WBA Welterweight Title by defeating Matthysse, as previously reported by KAMI.
This was also his first knockout victory in nine years. Some of his possible future opponents include current pound-for-pound kings Terrence Crawford, Mikey Garcia and Vasyl Lomachenko.
