On July 14th, Sunday, Dee-Ann Rogers, a black woman athlete and future lawyer, was crowned as the first-ever black Miss Universe Great Britain representative in the upcoming Miss Universe 2019-2019 competition.
KAMI learned that Dee-Ann Rogers is originally from Anguilla, a British territory in the Caribbean. The UK representative is also a champion of Anguilla in sports, winning a silver medal in heptathlon in the Central American and Caribbean Games.
Rogers also won a bronze medal in the CARIFTA Games. Her home country can never be prouder when she competed twice in the Commonwealth Games by running the 400 m category in India in 2010. She also competed in the heptathlon in Scotland in 2014.
She quipped, "To my knowledge, I am the first dreadlocked woman to walk across a Miss Universe Great Britain stage and that is absolutely most exciting to me." She reckons that this would be momentous, not only for her, but for every women of different types of colors.
Historically, the pageant has been picking non-black women since 1952. In its 66 years, this year's UK pageant broke the cycle when Rogers won the title.
In an interview BuzzFeed, Paul Abbandonato, national director for Miss Universe Great Britain, expressed his joy, "I could not be prouder of Dee-Ann and all that she represents. She is an exceptional role model for women of all skin colors and embodies all the qualities of the Miss Universe ideal."
The said competition was held at the Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre in Newport, Wales. Rogers competed with 40 other lovely candidates from all over England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, Wales and British overseas territories.
Fans and netizens could not contain their excitement and pride over Dee-Ann's reign as the first black woman representing Miss Universe UK.
The Anguilla representative is set to compete in the upcoming Miss Universe 2018-2019 in the Philippines along with other international candidates representing their home countries.
