Childhood of today's children would not be totally defined without screen time-that is spending hours in front of iPads, smartphones and televisions.

Of course, it may not be for every child but most of them had the chance to experience Educational apps and TV shows are great ways for children to sharpen their developing brains and hone their communication skills.

As for parents with busy schedules, it will always be an easier option but some studies show that delayed cognitive development in kids is associated with extended exposure to electronic media.

Dr. Aric Sigman, an associate fellow of the British Psychological Society and a Fellow of Britain’s Royal Society of Medicine say extended screen time can cause permanent damage to their still-developing brains especially when small children get hooked on tablets and smartphones.

“is the very thing impeding the development of the abilities that parents are so eager to foster through the tablets. The ability to focus, to concentrate, to lend attention, to sense other people’s attitudes and communicate with them, to build a large vocabulary—all those abilities are harmed.”

The period between birth and age three is a critical period because it is when permanent foundation upon which all later brain function is built.

Another effect of this is kids getting lazy because everything is just being given to them instantly in the forms of images, words, and pictures all at once.

Kids who were too much exposed to gadgets also tend to develop trouble making friends because they lack interaction with real people which would help them understand and connect with others.

But wait! Don’t trash those tablets for good. Despite those harmful effects, they can still be of use. After the child is over the age of 2, they can have an hour of screen time for their coordination, hone quick reactions, and even sharpen language skills.
