- There is also a possibility that the country would not be allowed to host the 2023 World Cup
Many basketball fans have been wondering about the consequences for the Gilas Pilipinas team of their recent brawl with the Australian team at the Philippine Arena in Bulacan.
KAMI learned that Butch Antonio, the team manager of Gilas, have revealed the possible penalties that will be handed out by FIBA.
“Maraming pinag-uusapan — possible sanctions…
“It can be game suspensions, fines, penalties, reprimands but I guess what’s best to do now is to wait for the decisions made by FIBA based on what they know…
“So wala pang firm. Ang ine-explain sa akin kanina, the lightest might be a reprimand but the harshest can be outright suspensions for a number of games for players or whoever they think participated (in the brawl). Depende na iyon sa FIBA.” Antonio said, according to ABS-CBN News.
Suspension of players would have a big impact on Gilas since it would mean that they would have to change the lineup.
Sison added that there is also a chance that the Philippines would not be allowed anymore to host the World Cup in 2023.
The brawl occurred during the third quarter of the game, when Australia was leading by 31 points.
When Australia’s Daniel Kickert had a physical altercation with Roger Pogoy, the other Gilas players tried to defend their teammate.
There are speculations that the Gilas team might be suspended by FIBA due to the unfortunate incident.
