- The 82-year-old lolo still drives the jeepney in Los Baños, Laguna going to UPLB Campus every day
- His 76-year-old wife accompanies him and helps him with the passenger’s fare
- They’ve been together for 50 years now but their love is stronger than ever
Lolo Rene Mojado, 82 years old, still drives his jeepney in Los Baños, Laguna that goes to UPLB Campus every day. But he is not alone because his wife, 76-year-old Aida rides with him daily.
They’re the real deal and they’re everyone’s relationship goals. The duo is inseparable and the UPLB community has seen their kind of relationship—one that exists forever.
The two has caught everyone’s attention, especially their passengers. While most people their age have stopped working and some are living comfortably and enjoying the rest of their years, the pair is up at 5 in the morning and start their daily grind of commuting along the stretch of Lopez Avenue.
“Kailangan naming gumising nga maaga kasi alas-siyete kalimitan ang simula ng klase ng mga estudyante. Sa labas na rin kami nanananghalian. Bumabalik kami ng bahay, gabi na, depende sa traffic, mga alas-siyete na ng gabi.”
Rappler reported that Rene and Aida have three children who now have their own families but their eldest is separated from her husband and needs help with her four kids who are still in school as her salary as a saleslady is not enough to sustain them.
“Tinutulungan namin 'yung aming mga apo... 'yung apat. Dalawang college [students] at 'yung Grade 10.... Siyempre walang pambaon 'yun, at pagkain namin.”
They have been asked by their other children to stop working but they want their grandkids to be able to go to school. So even when their earnings of around P700 a day is not enough for their daily needs and other challenges, they won’t stop.
Their challenges have bonded them even more. Students from UPLB are witnesses to their strong love. In an interview with Rappler, a student named Joshua Jonas said:
“Kapag nag-aabot ng bayad at sukli si Lola Aida, kita mo sa mukha niya ‘yung pagmamahal ng isang asawa.”
The elderly couple is not just a husband and wife, they are each other’s supporter. Aida helps Rene with his driving and points out if he’s going too fast or too slow. She also tells him if a passenger is about to get off because he now has hearing problems.
“Kapag may pumapara kasi na estudyante, sinasabihan ko siya na, 'Tatay, may napara.' Tapos ang sagot naman niyan sa 'kin, 'Narinig ko naman.' Tapos magtatawanan kami.”
They have a good laugh out of the little things in life and they like to have fun. They even wear couple shirts most of the time. But their love is not just for each other. It translates to how they treat their passengers too. Their jeepney has hand fans for the comfort of the students.
Rene and Aida have stood the test of time. They have been together for 50 years now and there’s no stopping them. There may be detours and stops in their journey, but just like any transportation, they go on together—hand in hand.
