The Supreme Court has let former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to vote in Lubao, Pampanga in this year’s Presidential elections.
In 2014, the Pampanga representative’s camp has asked the court to let her register for the 2016 election in her hometown. The Sandiganbayan’s anti-graft court’s first division has then approved the motion and gave Arroyo the opportunity to undergo biometric registration.
The former president’s registration as voter has been deactivated after missing two elections consecutively.
Arroyo is currently under hospital arrest at the Veterans Memorial Medical Center (VMMC) for the alleged misappropriation of the P366-million PCSO funds for her personal gain.
On May 9, Arroyo is slated to leave the hospital at 7 a.m. to go to Lubao. She is expected to be back at the said detention facility as soon as she casts her vote.
In line with her plunder case, Arroyo has also filed a petition asking the Supreme Court to reverse the Sandiganbayan’s decision to deny her to post bail. In the said petition, the former President cited her deteriorating health as the reason for her request to reverse the rulings of the Sandiganbayan.
She also stated that there were many cases wherein the Supreme Court had ruled to allow detained individuals to post bail if their confinement during the course of their presidency would imperil them.
