Social media went abuzz after netizens asked Disney to turn its ice princess into a representation of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) movement.
Netizens took to Twitter and asked the animation studio to give Queen Elsa a girlfriend in the sequel of its highly successful animated film, Frozen, after it made official confirmation in March of a follow-up movie.
Citing reports from The Telegraph, the trend #GiveElsaAGrilfriend was started by Twitter user Alexis Isabel on Monday, May 2 (Manila time), and has since been retweeted close to 2,000 times.
The online campaign #GiveElsaAGirlfriend has reportedly been making its rounds online, drawing fans of the Disney princess and curious netizens to think as to how the animation studio will build on its renewed success over the past years with its reinventions of the usual treatment of fairy tales.
Frozen is the 53rd animated feature in the Walt Disney Animated Classics series and was said to have been Inspired by Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tale The Snow Queen. The film tells the story of a fearless and adventurous princess Anna, who sets off on an epic journey alongside a rugged iceman, his loyal pet reindeer, and a naïve snowman, Olaf, to find her estranged sister Elsa whose icy powers have inadvertently trapped the kingdom in eternal winter after being proclaimed Queen.
The 2013 film was progressive in so many ways, highlighting the love between two sisters and the strength found in it instead of the usual prince-saves-the-princess-with-a-kiss plotline.
The film’s theme song, “Let It Go,” which won Best Original Song in the Oscars, is widely considered a major gay anthem.
Sang by Demi Lovato, the song presents the ostracized Queen Elsa, who hides in the mountains after people have found out about her magical ability of turning things to ice. She goes on a mountain top alone and sings the song considered to be her “coming out” and an embrace of who she truly is. This freedom allows her to have a personal transformation and to use her power without fear of judgment. She then becomes the ice queen unmindful of what other people has to say; the cold never bothered her anyway.
Netizens are saying that with Queen Elsa being turned into Disney’s first gay princess will be a huge step in allowing queer kids to feel loved and accepted in a world full of judgment and hate.
