- Mely Tagasa was best known for her role as the strict teacher in Iskul Bukol
- Her family confirmed her passing on March 24
- The actress had been in a coma after suffering a stroke
The actress who brought to life the strict but beloved character Miss Tapia from Iskul Bukol has passed away on Saturday, March 24.
Mely Tagasa's daughter, Lani Montreal, confirmed the sad news through Facebook.
She wrote in a Facebook status: "Rest in love and light, Mommy. Paalam. Mahal na mahal kita..."
The 82-year-old actress had been confined in Cardinal Santos Medical Center due to stroke. She had been in a coma.
As reported by PEP, Mely died at 12:26 AM.
Another daughter, Gina Marissa Tagasa, announced her mother's death through a Facebook status.
"At 12:26 am, our dearly beloved Miss Tapia has joined our Creator. The gates of heaven open for her. We love you very much, Ma!"
In an earlier report, PEP said the family has decided to remove Mely's respirator on March 21 . The actress has been dependent on the machine to breathe after her stroke.
PEP said Gina also made an FB post on March 22 about the family's decision.
"Mommy was weaned off her respirator yesterday afternoon. It was a tough and painful decision to make since she has been quite dependent on this machine.
"She is still in comatose stage but displays some pain and discomfort as she slightly jerks and squirms because of the intubation. (Ok, Doctors say it's just her 'reflexes').
"She now breathes with the help of an Oxygen tank. (Sorry, I may not be able to explain the process the way these Doctors do. Believe me, the Medical jargon is beginning to confuse us already while Hospital bills keep piling up every day).
"We continue to monitor her condition—her vital signs fluctuate every hour so I can't say everything is OK.”
Mely was supposed to celebrate her 83rd birthday on April 16.
After removing her respirator, her family had left it up to faith for a miracle.
"At this point, we leave everything to the good LORD. If He wills her to continue enjoying a quality life at 83 (her Bday is on the 16th of April), then a miracle is bound to happen. If He decides to take Mommy home with Him, Eternal Life in Heaven awaits. We accept. Our Faith will see us through,” said Gina in an FB post as quoted by PEP.
Mely Tagasa had entertained Filipinos for almost two decades as part of the cast of Iskul Bukol, a comedy show starring Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon.
She also starred in the 4 film versions: 1978's Iskul Bukol the Movie, 1980's Iskul Bukol Freshmen, 1987's The Best of Iskul Bukol: The Movie, and 2008's Iskul Bukol 20 Years After (Ungasis and Escaleras Adventure).
Before her iconic role as the teacher Miss Tapia, she was also a radio talent.
Mely was inducted in the Eastwood City Walk of Fame in 2017.
