In the 31st Oplan Galugad of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) on Wednesday morning, May 4, authorities discovered and seized several roosters among other contraband at the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prisons (NBP).
BuCor said that the roosters are being used by the inmates for cockfights and small-time gambling operations, and that they are a health risk to other inmates.
The target of the raid was Building 30 of the NBP, which is known as the area of the Batang Cebu group.
Aside from the fighting cocks, jail authorities confiscated mobile phones, jewelry, an air cooler, and even imported liquor.
A makeshift cabin owned by the Batang Mindanao group also didn’t escape scrutiny as officials discovered more contraband inside such as a flatscreen TV, an air conditioner, a personal bathroom and even a gym room. The said cabin was ordered to be demolished by the authorities.
NBP head Supt. Richard Schwarzkopf reassured the public that they continue to strengthen their efforts in blocking the entry of contraband inside the jail premises.
“Yung mga malalaking contraband natin, sinisiguro namin na wala nang nakakapasok. Ang hindi natin masisiguro ay kung paano naipapasok ‘yung shabu na talagang maliliit, mga cellphones, mga parts ng baril,” Supt. Schwarzkopf said.
(The bigger contraband, we make sure none of them gets in. But we are still figuring out how smaller contraband like crystal meth, cellphones and gun parts are smuggled inside.)
