When he was just 2 months old, Shan Escansio was rushed to a hospital in Cebu where he was diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a condition that cause the excessive accumulation of fluid in the brain.
If left untreated, it would result in the swelling of the head.
Luckily, Shan was brought into surgery early so his brain and skull developed properly.
However, according to Shan, the condition had an impact on his eyesight, causing him to be nearsighted.
Still, the Butuan native was grateful because he was able to live and walk normally.
That is, until he was 7 years old.
Shan had to undergo another brain operation to replace the tube that was inserted when he was a baby.
Unfortunately, an unexpected complication occured.
I was walking home sa compound namin dati tapos bigla na lang nabaluktot dahan-dahan ang paa ko," shared Shan in a message to KAMI.
His parents immediately brought him to an orthopedic doctor for a check up.
The doctor said it was either because of excessive medicine dose or a nerve that was affected during his last surgery.
He needed to use a cane to support him while he walks. He couldn't stand or walk too long because it exhausts him easily.
Because of his condition, he suffered bullying when he was younger.
Shan believes he couldn't find love because of his physical condition.
Tapos nagalit siya upon finding out. Ipinahiya ako sa harap ng classmates ko. I mean, grabe naman yan. Kung ayaw mo sakin pwede mo ko kausapin privately and reject. Don't do it in public," recalled Shan.
In spite of his rejections in life, Shan found where he belongs in music. He joined a band in 2008.
Shan shared that he was just 12 years old when he was inspired by music.
He may not have a woman to serenade yet, but Shan is serenading the world through his YouTube and Facebook pages.
