News about the arrest of Nader Essam Assaf, a Lebanese national who was one of the suspect of the gruesome murder of Pinay OFW broke on Friday.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Alan Peter Cayetano said he has informed President Rodrigo Duterte about the arrest of Nader Essam Assa.
“The President welcomes the news that Nader Essam Assaf is now in the hands of authorities in Lebanon,”said Cayetano.
“Assaf’s arrest is a critical first step in our quest for justice for Joanna and we are thankful to our friends in Kuwait and Lebanon for their assistance.”
On the same day President Duterte visited Joanna's family, the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait reported the arrest of Assaf to Manila.
The wanted couple have been the subject of an INTERPOL manhunt after Kuwaiti authorities discovered early this month the battered body of Demafelis inside a freezer in the couple’s abandoned apartment.
This was a year after the family's report about Joanna's lack of communication with them.
Kuwaiti Ambassador Mousaed Al-Thwaikh assured Cayetano that Kuwaiti authorities will do everything they can to find the suspects and bring them to justice several days ago.
Cayetano said he expects Kuwaiti authorities to request the extradition of Assaf so he could stand trial in Kuwait.
The murder of Joanna Demafelis made the Philippine government to implement deployment ban to first time OFWs to Kuwait.
Numerous cases of abuses, with some resulting in death resulted to deployment suspension prior to the ban.
