- Pres. Rodrigo Duterte met with Filipino-Chinese businessmen
- He talked about the promise of Chinese President Xi to him
- President then joked that China make the Philippines its province
Pres. Rodrigo Duterte has been under fire for his policies concerning China and the conflict that have arisen regarding the territories being claimed by China and the Philippines.
Lately, the President joked about making the Philippines a mere province of China.
He said this in a speech during the anniversary of the Chinese Business Club last February 19.
"Kung gusto 'nyo, gawin 'nyo na lang kaming province, parang Fujian (If you want, just make us a province, like Fujian)," said Duterte.
He even added, "Province of Philippines, Republic of China." This caused Filipino-Chinese businessmen to applaud the president who loves to make jokes concerning the country.
Prior to his joke, the president said that Chinese President Xi Jinping promised him that he will not build any structure in Scarborough Shoal.
"Maniwala kayo kasi 'yan ang commitment sa akin ni China. Si Xi Jinping mismo nagsabi and he's a man of honor." (Believe it because that is China's commitment to me. Xi Jinping himself said it and he's a man of honor.)," said Pres. Duterte relying on Chinese President's promise.
Pres. Rodrigo Duterte is the 16th President of the Philippines.
He won the presidential elections of 2016.
Duterte is also for the establishment of a federal government in PH.
