- The new fantasy series of ABS-CBN "Bagani" draws flak for its casting
- The show was criticized for including actors with foreign descent
- Liza Soberano responds on Twitter and defended herself
The new drama fantasy series of ABS-CBN "Bagani" which stars Liza Soberano, Enrique Gil, alongside with Matteo Guidicelli, Sofia Andres and Makisig Morales draws flak on social media for its casting, which PEP reported.
The show was apparently inspired by pre-colonial Philippines and netizens think that casting the likes of Liza and Enrique with Eurocentric features is definitely wrong.
A netizen commented about the show, saying that Enrique and Liza are not Pinoy.
"Not against Enrique and Liza pero kasi... gets. Hahaha di naman sila pinoy"
Liza took to Twitter to respond to this comment and defended herself.
"And who says were not pinoy? My Father is full filipino. I was raised by two filipinos since the age of 4. I looooove sinigang i think thats as pinoy as pinoy can get."
Liza said her father is a full blooded Filipino, she was also raised by 2 Pinoys while growing up, and she also loves Sinigang.
However, netizens noted that Liza missed out the point.
That she and Enrique doesn't look like Pinoys at all hence they have to put on a lot of bronzer and self-tanner to the actors to make them look "kayumanggi."
Also, a Facebook post by Paolo Cruz has now gone viral, he shared a screenshot of the comparison between Bagani and the movie Black Panther, where the latter was praised by critics for its celebration of African culture, which Rappler reported.
“Movies like [Black Panther] pay homage to African culture by innovating without sacrificing authenticity,”
"While shows like [Bagani] slather half-white Asians in bronzer to pass them off as precolonial Filipinos because [kayumanggi] doesn’t sell.”
"So Bagani and other cultural na palabas (cultural shows) is a chance for us to show and empower Filipinos. To show authenticity, influence... especially the young minds, that no matter how dark your skin is, you are beautiful."
Meanwhile, some of their fans defended the actors.
The headwriter and Bagani creator defended its casting, Mark Duane Angos said the show is not set on a pre-colonial Philippines but a fictional world called "Sansinukob."
"Ang silver lining, pinag-uusapan natin ngayon ang etimolohiya ng Bagani. For once, hindi tayo nagtatalo o nagkukuro-kuro tungkol sa demogorgon o kung Targaryen ba sina Daenerys at Jon Snow. Konseptong Pilipino, likhang Pilipino. Mabuhay ang pantaseryeng Pilipino!"
