- The University of the Philippines (UP) ranked 156th among Asian universities
- The state university jumped from being only in the 201st to 250th bracket in 2017
- UP is the only Philippine university included in the list
The University of the Philippines proved it is not wasting taxpayers money when it became the only Philippine school included in the list of top 200 universities in Asia.
The list was collated by London-based publication Times Higher Education (THE).
The 2018 THE Asia University Rankings was released on February 7.
According to a report by CNN Philippines, UP Vice President for Academic Affairs Cynthia Rose Bautista said UP's research works are being cited or mentioned by scholars all over the world.
This means that UP's work are at par with other academes in the world and are well-respected.
"We have not gone to details in terms of areas where we have more influence. For now we believe Elsevier when it says our citations are global as opposed to being confined to particular regions only," said Bautista.
Elsevier is a publishing company that have shared five-year data to UP. Their data showed that UP's papers are cited 14 percent more frequently than the world average.
Among Asian universities, the top three are the National University of Singapore, and China's Tsinghua University and Peking University.
UP is also the only university included in the THE's World University Rankings.
UP's students were criticized online recently after President Rodrigo Duterte warned student-activists that he will give their slots to "bright" Lumad.
The president said this because he said UP students keep skipping classes to protest his administration's policies.
